I wrote “Bad Mormon: A Memoir” because I felt it was necessary to share my story as a former member of the Mormon Church. Growing up in a strict and traditional Mormon household, I was taught to always strive for perfection and conform to the expectations of the church. However, as I got older and began to question some of the teachings and practices of the church, I realized that being a “good Mormon” was not always synonymous with being a good person.
Through my personal experiences, I wanted to shed light on some of the harmful aspects of the Mormon Church that often go unnoticed by those outside of the community. From strict gender roles and shaming tactics used to maintain control over members, to the pressure to conform and suppress individuality, I wanted to expose the damaging effects these beliefs can have on individuals.
Additionally, I wanted to give a voice to others who may have had similar experiences but were too afraid or ashamed to speak out. By sharing my story, it is my hope that others will feel less alone in their struggles with leaving a religion that has been deeply ingrained in their lives.
